ST CLARE'S COURTYARD
Canberra, ACT
The new central courtyard at St Clare's College was designed to provide a multi-use space in the heart of the campus.
The landscape setting creates an attractive, safe and effective learning and play environment for the school which considers the practical and long-term maintenance and management requirements for the grounds.
Significant coordination and design resolution was required to deal with the exisiting bedrock that was present within the site of works. This required developing construction strategies that minimised the amount of excavation required, whilst providing sufficient depth for planting and drainage of the courtyard. To resolve this, the design provided raised planters that act as seating walls and allowed the ability to install extensive garden beds and advanced tree species for instant canopy and shade.
The result is an attractive space that provides provides a multi-use breakout space for outdoor learning or play.
